The continuing knee-injury problem of Gael Monfils has forced the Frenchman to end his season early after crashing out in the first round of the Stockholm Open. The No 47 who has had months of intermittent ATP play due to knee problems has finally packed it in for 2012.

The flamboyant shotmaker and crowd-pleaser won the Swedish event in 2011 but had little to offer in his three-set loss to a local wild card Patrik Rosenholm, ranked 436. Monfils had only returned to the courts after a lengthy summer pause where he missed the French Open, Wimbledon, Olympics and US Open.

“He doesn’t have a problem with his knee but we decided there was no point in playing the rest of the year. We have already turned our attention to 2013,” Monfils’s coach Patrick Chamagne confided to AFP.

Only a month previously, Monfils reached the quarter-finals in Bangkok while apparently playing in some pain. The one-time No. 7 skipped the Shanghai Masters and had been hoping to defend his title in Stockholm – but to no avail.
