Singles – First Round: (6) D Istomin def. B Phau 5-7 7-5 6-1
Even with the win, we’re quite sure Denis Istomin remains below #40.
Singles – First Round: (8) T Ito def. R Bautista-Agut 6-3 1-6 6-2
Tatsuma Ito is well below #50, so it’s surprising that he is seeded here — but certainly not surprising that he could beat a clay expert on an indoor court.
Singles – First Round: L Rosol def. D Gimeno-Traver 7-6(11-9) 7-6(7-2)
Lukas Rosol, we know, is pretty good at winning first rounds. It’s the second round that is the test….
Singles – First Round: M Jaziri def. R Ram 6-3 6-1
Malek Jaziri has fallen back below #100, so this is a hopeful sign for him.
Doubles – First Round: (3) Berlocq/Bogomolov def. Dlouhy/Dolgopolov 6-7(2-7) 6-3 10-5 (Match TB)
The long, long slide continues for Lukas Dlouhy. We still find ourselves wondering how he finds enough money to keep playing, given his recent results.

Singles – First Round: (6) M Youzhny def. B Baker 6-3 6-1
The autumn slump continues for Brian Baker, who loses another Top Fifty chance.
Singles – First Round: (8) J Nieminen def. T Kamke 6-3 6-4
Jarkko Nieminen has finalist points to defend — and probably needs to defend to stay Top Forty. A nice, easy, early first round win is very good news for him.
Doubles – First Round: Anderson/Erlich def. (4) Gonzalez/Lipsky 7-5 6-4
This is intriguing. We had thought that Jonathan Erlich was the weak link in the team of Erlich/Ram — after all, Ram did better without Erlich than vice versa. But maybe things aren’t as bad for Erlich as we thought.
Vienna
Singles – First Round: M Matosevic def. (6) R Haase 1-6 6-3 6-2
This raises a real possibility that Robin Haase will lose his Top Fifty spot.
Singles – First Round: G Muller def. S Darcis 6-7(3-7) 6-4 6-3
A slight upset — Gilles Muller is ranked six spots below Steve Darcis. But the fast surface surely helped Muller, who had 16 aces.
Doubles – First Round: (WC) M Fischer/Oswald def. (3) Huey/Inglot 6-3 6-4
