Three spots remain open for the World Tour Finals after Spain’s David Ferrer was confirmed as the fifth to qualify for the eight-man event which begins November 5. Ferrer will be playing the season wrapup for the third straight year, reaching the semi-finals a year ago against eventual champion Roger Federer whole losing all three of his group matches the year before.
Ferrer played the elite tournament for the first time in 2007 when it was held in Shanghai and played the final against Federer.
Spanish number two Ferrer joins Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and injured compatriot Rafael Nadal in the London field, with the availability of Nadal an open question due to a knee injury which has kept him away from the game for almost four months. Ferrer lost in the first round in Beijing and skipped the Shanghai Masters last week through injury.
In 2012, the 30-year-old Valencia native has won a career-high five titles on three different surfaces, including Auckland, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Buenos Aires, Acapulco and Bastad.
“I’m very happy because to qualify again is a great achievement,” said Ferrer in a statement. “It’s always one of my goals at the beginning of each year.
The point race now has three weeks remaining. with ATP 250 tournaments this week: the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, the If Stockholm Open and the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. Tomas Berdych, Juan Martin del Potro and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga currently hold down the final three qualifying spots with all three playing this week.
