Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) N Djokovic def. J Melzer 6-1 6-2
Novak Djokovic pads his Race lead just a little. Roger Federer has said he will play Shanghai despite the death threat. He really needs to if he wants to end the year at #1. We don’t know where Jurgen Melzer will end the year, but it is likely he will end the week at #35.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) J Tsonga def. M Youzhny 6-3 6-2
Just when the points would have started to count for Mikhail Youzhny, he loses. And, because others are adding points, than means he will fall in the rankings, from #28 to probably #30.
Singles – Quarterfinal: F Mayer def. (WC) Z Zhang 6-3 6-4
Florian Mayer is one of those who gains at Youzhny’s expense. He will rise to at least #27 and probably #26.
Singles – Quarterfinal: F Lopez def. S Querrey 4-6 6-4 6-4
Feliciano Lopez is the other player who passes Youzhny, although he hasn’t gained much yet. He blocks Sam Querrey’s Top Twenty quest for now; we show the American at #22.
Doubles – Quarterfinal:Fleming/Hutchins def. (3) Lindstedt/Tecau 6-7(3-7) 6-2 10-5 (Match Tiebreak)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Berlocq/Istomin def. Bhupathi/Bopanna 6-2 7-6(8-6)
Bhupathi/Bopanna remain at #8 in the doubles Race — and #8 will not qualify because of the Grand Slam Wildcard. So this is a real blow.
Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Cilic/Matosevic walkover (Cilic – Right Hip)
Tokyo
Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) A Murray def. (7) S Wawrinka 6-2 3-6 6-2
Andy Murray just keeps winning in Asia…. Stanislas Wawrinka added points, but others added more, so Wawrinka will be falling from #17 to #16.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) K Nishikori def. (2) T Berdych 7-5 6-4
Nishikori is the one who benefits at Wawrinka’s expense; we show him rising to #16. Tomas Berdych is still at #6 in safe points, but because he was the defending champion, his total falls substantially. If Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wins his next match, he will pass Berdych.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) M Raonic def. (3) J Tipsarevic 6-7(5-7) 6-2 7-6(9-7)
A tough result for Janko Tipsarevic, although perhaps not a big surprise after he withdrew from the doubles on Thursday. He remains #9, but this is a blow to his London hopes. Milos Raonic will probably rise to #14 as a result of this.
Singles – Quarterfinal: M Baghdatis def. (Q) D Tursunov 6-2 6-4
We show Marcos Baghdatis up to #36. Dmitry Tursunov will probably be just above #100.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Paes/Stepanek def. Murray/Murray 6-4 3-6 10-2 (Match TB)
Not a big blow to Andy Murray, who doesn’t care about doubles anyway, but Jamie needed these points….
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Peya/Soares def. Chardy/Melo 6-7(4-7) 6-3 10-8 (Match TB)
