Singles – Second Round: (1) N Djokovic def. C Berlocq 6-1 6-3

Carlos Berlocq will remain right around #50. Novak Djokovic will remain #2, but he continues to crank up the pressure on Roger Federer in the Race.

Singles – Second Round: (3) J Tsonga def. N Davydenko walkover (Right Toe)

Fifty-five years ago today (that is October 4, 1957), the Soviet Union started the so-called Space Age by launching Sputnik 1 — an event whose after-effects, in many ways, made modern tennis possible, for reasons ranging from satellite sports transmissions to materials science to the global positioning systems which people now rely on to get to tournaments. But, of course, the Soviet Union is no more. Maybe there is some symbolism there. Nikolay Davydenko remains below #40.

Singles – Second Round: J Melzer def. (6) A Dolgopolov 7-6(11-9) 2-6 6-1

Jurgen Melzer may go as high as #35. But Alexandr Dolgopolov will not rise above #20, although there isn’t much chance he will fall.

Singles – Second Round: F Mayer def. (WC) M Copil 3-6 6-3 6-2

Florian Mayer hasn’t absolutely guaranteed that he will stay Top Thirty, but this makes it extremely likely.

Doubles – First Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Andujar/F Lopez 6-1 7-6(7-5)

Doubles – First Round: Haas/Melzer def. (4) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-3 6-4

This adds something to the interest of the doubles Race, since Fyrstenberg/Matkowski came in at #6 in the Race. By this time, the #6 team is usually pretty safe — but there will be a Grand Slam Wildcard this year….

Doubles – First Round: Fleming/Hutchins def. (WC) Chang/Li 6-3 6-2

Tokyo

Singles – First Round: (3) J Tipsarevic def. G Simon 4-6 6-3 6-1

That’s now two straight losses for Gilles Simon. He loses what could have been a good chance to rise above #18.

Singles – First Round: (4) J Monaco def. (Q) G Dimitrov 6-2 6-1

Juan Monaco isn’t going to rise above #10 this week, but he’s making it harder for John Isner to reclaim a Top Ten spot.

Singles – Second Round: (1) A Murray def. L Lacko 6-1 6-2

Andy Murray can’t climb this week, especially since he’s defending points, but the more he puts in the bank now, obviously, the better off he could be next year.

Singles – Second Round: (7) S Wawrinka def. J Chardy 7-6(7-1) 6-7(6-8) 7-5

Stanislas Wawrinka needs two more wins to climb in the rankings — and, unfortunately for him, he faces Murray next.

Doubles – First Round: Monaco/Nishikori def. (3) S Gonzalez/Lipsky 7-6(7-1) 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Chardy/Melo def. (WC) Moriya/Suzuki 6-3 6-4

No Key Biscayne, No Problem; New Site, Same Great Miami Open Tennis Event

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
