According to Rafael Nadal himself, he has no idea when his troublesome left knee will allow him to return to tennis and as of last week he still hadn’t touched a racket in his rehabilitation process. However the organizers of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi maintain the Majorcan will make his comeback at their exhibition tournament, beginning December 27.
Nadal has been announced in a stellar field that also includes Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic , U.S. Open champion Andy Murray and world no.5 David Ferrer.
Benito Perez-Barbadillo, Nadal’s official publicity officer, reportedly e-mailed The Associated Press, saying the French Open champion and former world no.1 who hasn’t played since the second round of Wimbledon in June is undergoing treatment for his injury “and hopefully he will be ready for” both the exhibition in Abu Dhabi and the Australian Open that begins in January.
A spokesman for the Mubadala World Tennis Championship said: “This year’s line-up is the most competitive in the tournament’s history and welcomes back British no.1 and World no.3 Andy Murray who is looking to retain his 2009 title. He is joined by former World no.1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic alongside two time champion and World no.4 Rafael Nadal.
“The remainder of the field, all within the top 10 in the world, includes the fiery World no.5 David Ferrer and World no.6, Tomas Berdych rounded out with the competitive World no.9 Janko Tipsarevic.
“With pride at stake, rivalries will be renewed when these global tennis icons play to a sold-out stadium of 5,000 spectators per day. Millions around the world will tune in to watch an event that is now firmly established on the global tennis calendar as one of the most admired tennis events.”
