The Botswana Tennis Association is hoping that Venus and Serena Williams will make a stopover in the country when they tour South Africa in November.
The Williams sisters are scheduled to visit the Arthur Ashe tennis Center in Soweto, South Africa, for an exhibition match at Ellis Park.
The Botswana Tennis Association has written to the South Africa Tennis Federation (SATF) with a proposition that the two also visit other countries in the region.
There are also hopes that the Williams sisters will visit Namibia and Zambia. “We want to bring them here because it would promote the girl child’s development in tennis because I think we are still lagging behind in terms of that,” the BTA’s Nelson Amanze, said. “The Williams sisters are followed more than anyone else because people are able to relate with them. It is important to pursue every avenue to bring them to Botswana.”
In South Africa, the two will run a clinic for juniors. “The Williams sisters are the children’s role models,” said Franklyn Tlhoaele, an officer at the Ellis Park facility. :We’re over the moon about this planned visit. Tennis will never be the same again in Soweto as children will aspire to be like them one day.”
