Australian Davis Cup captain Patrick Rafter has been spending a few days away from tennis doing tourism promotion on the tropical far north of the island-continent, The popular two-time Grand Slam winner has done his bit accompanied by his wife and children in picturesque Port Douglas, jumping-off point for the Great Barrier Reef .
With 3,000 kilometres between itself and southerly Melbourne – the distance is a third longer than from New York City to Miami – the trip “up north” is always long-haul.
Rafter made his visit to the year-round VIP resort village as part of his ambassadorial role with a nationwide hotel chain.
The 39-year-old is charged with promoting local attractions and activities including focussing on the unique “reef and rainforest” locale. “That’s what you want when you’re holidaying with kids – the easier the better. It’s all about spending quality time together,” he said.
But Rafter did not totally forget his sport as he got in a friendly game with the Mantra hotel group boss and then signed the obligatory autographs.
