Singles – Second Round: (1) Victoria Azarenka def. Tamira Paszek 6-1 6-1

Another step toward the year-end #1 ranking for Victoria Azarenka. She leaves Tamira Paszek still below #25.

Singles – Second Round: (2) Maria Sharapova def. (Q) Heather Watson 6-7(7-9) 6-3 6-4

Maria Sharapova really needs to do well here if she is to have any shot at the year-end #1, so this close score is perhaps a cause for concern. But her #2 ranking is now quite safe.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Agnieszka Radwanska def. Jelena Jankovic 6-2 7-5

A decent start for Agnieszka Radwanska, but she still needs more to stay ahead of Serena Williams in the contest for #3. At least she knows that she will be playing in Istanbul; the WTA has now officially clinched her. Jelena Jankovic will not rise above #25.

Singles – Second Round: Petra Martic def. (4) Petra Kvitova 6-4 6-4

Petra Kvitova will remain #5 for now, but this raises a faint possibility that she will lose the spot next week, and it keeps her from clinching for Istanbul. Nor does it appear likely that she can rise to #4 next week.

Singles – Second Round: (5) Angelique Kerber def. (WC) Ayumi Morita 6-3 6-4

Angelique Kerber can’t reach #5 this week, but she has the potential to get a lot closer. Every win, obviously, helps.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Sara Errani def. (Q) Johanna Larsson 6-3 7-6(7-1)

Sara Errani and Li Na are in a close contest for the #7 ranking. So far, Errani is looking stronger…

Singles – Second Round: (7) Li Na def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5 4-6 6-2

…but Li at least did turn up and did play — and she beat a Top 25 opponent. Pavlyuchenkova won’t rise above #25, though.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Samantha Stosur def. Francesca Schiavone 4-6 6-2 7-5

Francesca Schiavone remains stuck below #35. Samantha Stosur gives her Istanbul chances a slight boost but remains #9.

Singles – Second Round: (9) Marion Bartoli def. Julia Goerges 6-2 7-5

There will be no return to the Top Twenty for Julia Goerges at this time.

Singles – Second Round: (10) Caroline Wozniacki def. Daniela Hantuchova 7-6(7-3) 6-1

Daniela Hantuchova will not rise above #33. Caroline Wozniacki is still at #11, but she has won seven in a row and will start to add points if she can win her next match.

Singles – Second Round: Urszula Radwanska def. (11) Ana Ivanovic 3-6 6-4 6-2

Ana Ivanovic may be talking about a return to #1, but she loses another Top Ten chance. Urszula Radwanska edges a little closer to the Top Thirty; she should be at least #32 next week.

Singles – Second Round: (12) Dominika Cibulkova def. Zheng Jie 6-0 6-3

Zheng Jie loses her Top Twenty chance. With Ana Ivanovic out, Dominika Cibulkova needs two more wins to rise to #12.

Singles – Second Round: (14) Roberta Vinci def. (Q) Pauline Parmentier 6-3 6-1

Roberta Vinci’s odds of returning to the Top Fifteen now look very good indeed.

Singles – Second Round: (Q) Jamie Hampton def. (15) Kaia Kanepi 5-7 6-2 6-3

Kaia Kanepi loses quarterfinalist points and her Top Fifteen ranking.

Singles – Second Round: (16) Lucie Safarova def. Klara Zakopalova walkover (Left Wrist Injury)

Klara Zakopalova loses some points and will fall out of the Top Thirty.

Singles – Second Round: (17) Nadia Petrova def. Simona Halep 7-6(7-4) 6-0

Simona Halep will be #48 or #49, which is Where she came in. Nadia Petrova still needs at least two more wins to rise above her current #18.

Doubles – First Round: (3) Srebotnik/Zheng def. Dellacqua/Jans-Ignacik 6-4 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Kops-Jones/Spears def. Husarova/Voskoboeva 7-6(7-4) 6-3

Kops-Jones/Spears really need to do well here if they are to stay in the WTA doubles race. So this was a big match for them.

Doubles – First Round: Lisicki/Raymond def. Niculescu/Rosolska 6-3 6-1

Lisa Raymond should move ahead of partner Liezel Huber in the rankings because of this. But she won’t be getting back to #1 any time soon — she has champion’s points coming off this week.

Doubles – First Round: Hsieh/Medina Garrigues def. Grandin/Uhlirova 6-0 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Goerges/Zahlavova Strycova def. (WC) Chuang/Date-Krumm 6-1 5-7 10-5 (Match TB)
