Singles – First Round: P Petzschner def. (WC) P Siriluethaiwattana 6-1 6-2

Philip Petzschner was hurting last week, so this was a tough schedule for him. But it was also a nice schedule, since his opponent had a name longer than his tennis resume….

Doubles – First Round: (4) Butorac/Hanley def. Cermak/Mertinak 6-2 3-6 10-4 (Match TB)

Maybe Cermak/Mertinak should have waited until the clay season to reunite. They’re among those rare doubles players who prefer clay.

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Ratiwatana/Ratiwatana def. Garcia-Lopez/Matosevic 6-4 6-3

Kuala Lumpur

Singles – First Round: V Pospisil def. (8) J Melzer 6-4 2-0 retired (Left Quadriceps)

Apart from pain, this costs Jurgen Melzer 25 points. He’s still Top Forty for now, but it feels as if he’ll end the year below that mark.

Singles – First Round: I Sijsling def. (WC) A Deen Heshaam 6-2 6-1

Igor Sijsling just took a rankings hit (see the Feature), and he is probably jet lagged, but he was facing an opponent ranked #1557.

Singles – First Round: (Q) M Yani def. B Baker 6-3 7-6(7-4)

This is turning into a rather disappointing fall for Brian Baker, who will remain well below the Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: (WC) J Wang def. (Q) R Ghedin 6-3 6-3

The qualifying fields this week were so weak that they ended up padding them with half a dozen doubles specialists. A couple of whom actually made the main draws. So little wonder if the qualifiers go out easily….
