Seoul
Singles – Second Round: (1) Caroline Wozniacki def. (Q) Caroline Garcia 6-2 6-3
Another good match for Caroline Wozniacki, but it’s not enough points to count.
Singles – Second Round: Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez def. (4) Nadia Petrova walkover (Low Back Injury)
This is pretty strange. Diseases are contagious — but injuries? Nadia Petrova and Maria Kirilenko are doubles partners — and both pulled out of Seoul with bad backs! For Petrova, that means she will not rise above #18. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez still needs more to stay Top Hundred.
Singles – Second Round: (6) Varvara Lepchenko def. Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4 6-1
Anabel Medina Garrigues defended her points, but it appears she will fall a spot or two even so. Varvara Lepchenko just keeps adding points — one more win, in all likelihood, would make her Top Twenty.
Singles – Second Round: (7) Klara Zakopalova def. Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1 7-6(8-6)
Klara Zakopalova was defending semifinalist points, so she still needs more to keep her #27 ranking. At least this should keep her Top Thirty. But Magdalena Rybarikova, last year’s Guangzhou finalist, will be falling below #70.
Singles – Second Round: (8) Ekaterina Makarova def. (Q) Jamie Hampton 6-3 7-5
Ekaterina Makarova is up to probably #22, although she needs a final to go any higher.
Singles – Second Round: Tamira Paszek def. (WC) Lee So-Ra 6-2 6-0
This shows just how lucky Lee So-Ra was to face an injured Maria Kirilenko in the first round…. One more win might put Tamira Paszek in the Top Thirty.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Kops-Jones/Spears def. Jurak/Marosi 6-2 5-7 10-8 (Match TB)
Kops-Jones/Spears continue to do what they can to earn the #4 spot at Istanbul. But they still have a very steep climb ahead of them.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Grandin/Uhlirova def. Cadantu/Lepchenko 7-6(7-5) 6-3
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Paszek/Zakopalova def. (4) Dushevina/Rosolska 6-3 3-6 10-5 (Match TB)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Amanmuradova/King def. Daniilidou/Moulton-Levy 6-4 4-6 10-4 (Match TB)
Guangzhou
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Sorana Cirstea def. (8) Alize Cornet 6-4 6-3
Sorana Cirstea has defended most of her points, but that still leaves her just below the Top Thirty. Alize Cornet will be around #45.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) Urszula Radwanska def. (5) Chanelle Scheepers 6-1 7-5
Urszula Radwanska is now up to #36 (amazing to think that the Radwanskas are now a higher-ranked sister act than the Williamses), but Chanelle Scheepers, last year’s champion, will fall out of the Top Fifty (probably #53).
Singles – Quarterfinal: Laura Robson def. (7) Peng Shuai 7-5 5-7 6-2
The British players really do seem to all be inspiring each other these days. Laura Robson leaves Peng Shuai no better than #45; Robson is just below #60.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Hsieh Su-Wei def. Mathilde Johansson 6-3 6-0
Hsieh Su-Wei hits the Top Fifty — not bad for someone who seemed to have retired from singles a few years back!
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Gajdosova/Niculescu def. (WC) Yan/L Zhang 6-1 6-4
We’re guessing Yan Zi is a little sore after her first round. Still not a bad return to action.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Han/Liu def. (2) Chan/Chan 5-1 retired (Y.Chan: Dizziness)
Chan Yung-Jan was sick in the singles, so this was to be expected.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Tanasugarn/S Zhang def. Hsieh/Hsieh 6-3 3-6 13-11 (Match TB)
If you’re having trouble with your Zhangs, this is Zhang Shuai, the one you might have heard of if you pay way too much attention to tennis. The one with Yan Zi was Zhang Liang, whom you shouldn’t have heard of even if you are a women’s tennis fanatic.
In other interesting footnotes, this is the second sister act Tanasugarn/Zhang beat here; they beat the Semas in the first round
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Luzhanska/S Zheng def. Aoyama/Chang 1-6 6-4 14-12 (Math TB)
Luzhanksa/Zheng had a first round walkover, so this is a win they needed to earn any points.
