St. Petersburg
Singles – Second Round: (1) M Youzhny def. R Ram 6-1 6-4
From now on, the points count for Mikhail Youzhny. But he needs at least a final to rise higher than #28.
Singles – Second Round: (3) M Klizan def. S Bolelli 6-3 6-3
Martin Klizan is now effectively guaranteed to rise at least one spot. One more win might make him Top Forty.
Singles – Second Round: (4) F Fognini def. S Stakhovsky 7-6(7-4) 6-4
Fabio Fognini is getting close to the Top Fifty. And he is the only seed left in the bottom half.
Singles – Second Round: (7) G Garcia-Lopez def. P Lorenzi 6-1 3-1 retired (Left Achilles)
That’s the second retirement here (good news, perhaps, for Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who was ranked just barely ahead of Paolo Lorenzi), plus a pullout. And the day was young….
Singles – Second Round: R Berankis def. (8) J Zopp 6-3 retired (Lower Back)
We’re clearly getting toward the end of the year here, since this made it three retirements. And that in a field full of players who play everything!
Singles – Second Round: R Bautista-Agut def. (WC) T Gabashvili 6-3 6-4
More evidence that this is a surprisingly slow indoor court.
Singles – Second Round: F Cipolla def. G Zemlja 6-2 6-7(5-7) 6-3
A bit of an upset, this; Zemlja came in ranked a dozen places ahead of Cipolla.
Singles – Second Round: D Gimeno-Traver def. L Kubot 6-4 7-6(7-5)
Another sort of clay-ey looking upset. Evidently all the slowcourt types who signed up for this event knew what they were up to.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Klizan/Polasek def. (2) Fleming/Hutchins 7-5 2-6 10-4 (Match TB)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Lacko/Zelenay def. (3) Cermak/Mertinak 4-6 6-3 10-7 (Match TB)
Metz
Singles – Second Round: (2) P Kohlschreiber def. B Paire 6-2 1-6 6-1
This doesn’t exactly look like the result of someone who skipped Davis Cup in order to play here….
Singles – Second Round: I Karlovic def. (3) M Granollers 7-6(7-3) 2-2, retired (intercostal muscle)
Unlike Philipp Kohlschreiber, Marcel Granollers did play Davis Cup. To his cost, seemingly; he will stay Top 25, but he won’t be climbing.
Singles – Second Round: (5) A Seppi def. (Q) V Millot 6-2 6-1
Andreas Seppi hasn’t moved much as yet, but one more win would put him just below the Top 25.
Singles – Second Round: (7) G Monfils def. N Mahut 7-6(7-4) 7-5
Another solid result for Gael Monfils — but still nothing that counts.
Singles – Second Round: (8/WC) N Davydenko def. G Muller 7-5 6-4
Gilles Muller was a semifinalist last year; he can expect to fall below #80.
Singles – Second Round: J Levine def. (LL) M Berrer 6-4 3-6 6-0
Michael Berrer remains far below #100 — and shows little sign of turning things around.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Mahut/Roger-Vasselin def. Brands/Levine 3-6 6-3 10-7 (Match TB)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Malisse/Waske def. Monroe/Stadler 6-0 6-3
