World no.1 Roger Federer maintains he is exhausted after a strenuous summer that saw him reclaim both the Wimbledon title and world no.1 ranking but fail in his bid for Olympic gold and a sixth US Open title. Now the 31 year-old maintains he is in desperate need of a break.
Last year Federer opted to miss the entire Asian swing, including the Masters 1000 series event in China, the Shanghai Rolex Masters. Although there has been no official announcement yet, the Swiss’ participation in an event where the title sponsor is one of his major endorsers, seems dubious.
“I need a holiday badly,” said Federer after playing all three days in Switzerland’s 3-2 win over the Netherlands in Amsterdam that resulted in World Group participation next year.”
Federer has so far played 69 matches in 2012 and he continued: “I’m wounded, tired, and exhausted and need some time off right now and see where I go from here.
“Nothing has been decided for the rest of year, even though there is a plan in place, that plan might change. I need to go back to drawing board to see what’s important.”
Earlier in Federer’s career he was insistent that winning the Davis Cup for Switzerland was one of his priorities but it seems as though that desire has dimmed. When asked how much he valued the importance of his country winning the sport’s main team event he replied: “Not really a whole lot to be quite honest.”
He continued: “For me it’s more about taking part with my team-mates, I enjoy being with them, and that’s about it really.
“I have a good time and my team-mates are all my best friends – I don’t see them regular basis on tour and we have a great friendship and it’s always a lot of fun.”
