It’s time for Gael Monfils to make his comeback to tennis, with the Frenchman finally back on court at home in Metz this week after missing nearly four months of pay due to a knee injury.
The knees are the weak link for the Frenchman, one of the showmen in a game badly missing a few more of them. But, like Rafael Nadal who will not be back in the ATP mix until his own chronically bad knees are fully recovered, the Swiss-based Monfils has had to take his time.
That meant missing three of the four Grand Slams and the Olympic Games.
“I’m just recently back with the preparation,” the 2009 tournament winner told French media said before his return to action in the closing months of the ATP campaign. “I have a lot of desire to play tennis, I miss it terribly. But I am trying not to be too anxious, I may put unnecessary pressure on myself.”
The No. 44 added: “It was a blow not to play the U.S. Open. Slipping in the rankings is something that can happen, that’s life. I’ll try to get back to my level, I think, it’s better than the current position in the rankings.”
Monfils said he has been keeping occupied through travels, during which he shot photos and videos “I travelled around half of Europe in the car with friends and slept in tents. This allowed me to discover many countries and to feel good mentally.”
Monfils also said that he met a new trainer, Marc Raquil, whom he hopes to keep working with as he returns to his day job on court.
