Singles – First Round: (7) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez def. (WC) E Donskoy 2-6 6-4 6-3

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez likes fast courts, so the closeness of this result is a real surprise.

Singles – First Round: R Ram def. M Bachinger 6-4 6-4

Rajeev Ram also likes fast courts (insofar as he likes anything, anyway), so this is not a surprise.

Singles – First Round: F Cipolla def. (Q) A Vasilevski 7-6(7-4) 7-6(8-6)

Andrei Vasilevski came here ranked #785, so just making it through qualifying increases his points by more than 60%. He ought to rise a bit more than a hundred places.

Metz

Singles – First Round: J Blake def. (WC) A Olivetti 6-2 7-6(7-4)

Considering that this was the day’s only main draw match, it wasn’t exactly what you would call thrilling. But it brings James Blake a little closer to the Top Hundred. This won’t put him back in, but one more win very likely would.

Even though there were no seeds in action, we did lose one: Jarkko Nieminen has withdrawn, replaced by Lucky Loser Michael Berrer.
