Singles – Final: Kirsten Flipkens def. (8) Lucie Hradecka 6-1 7-5
Kirsten Flipkens really is channeling the spirit of Kim Clijsters. In fact, she accomplished something Clijsters did not manage this year: She won a title. That after never even having reached a final before.
Considering that she came in ranked #102, this is very big for her. She increases her points by about 40%. She will rise to probably just below #70. Which means that she’ll be getting into a much better class of events.
Lucie Hradecka is still looking for her first WTA title. Had she won it, she would have easily risen above #50. As it is, it appears she will have to settle being right at that mark.
Doubles – Final: (3) Malek/Mladenovic def. (1) Rosolska/Watson 7-6(7-5) 4-6 10-7 (Match TB)
This was very close indeed, but Kristina Mladenovic is really on a roll right now. She and Malek were broken as they served for the match in the second set, and went down in the match tiebreak, but then came roaring back, winning ten of the last fifteen points.
Tatjana Malek has won a number of Challenger doubles titles, but this is her first WTA victory. It will put her in the doubles Top Hundred. Mladenovic earns her second title, following the Canadian Open. She also had a good score at the U. S. Open. She is getting close to the Top Thirty. And, based on recent results, she probably deserves to go higher.
