DAY TWO SUMMARY

The United States captured the doubles rubber today against Spain to extend the tie to a final day at the 2012 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Semifinal on an outdoor red clay court at the Parque Hermanos Castro in Gijon, Spain. The U.S. trails Spain, 2-1.

Bob and Mike Bryan defeated Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, in a match lasting three hours and 38 minutes. This was the fifth time that Bob and Mike had played with the U.S. down 2-0 and on each occasion, they have won the doubles rubber to extend the tie to a third day. The Bryans are now 20-2 together in Davis Cup competition and are the winningest doubles team in U.S. Davis Cup history.

DAY THREE PREVIEW

The tie concludes Sunday with “reverse singles” starting with each country’s No. 1 player squaring off followed by the No. 2 players in the fifth and final match. Each match is best-of-five-sets until one country wins three matches. Then, the remaining match(es), if any, are played best-of-three sets.

Sam Querrey and John Isner, who both lost in singles on the first day of play, will look to stage a U.S. comeback on the final day of Davis Cup competition.

Isner is scheduled to face off against world No. 5 and US Open semifinalist David Ferrer. Isner is 3-1 when competing on the last day of a Davis Cup tie (1-1 in live matches). Isner and Ferrer have met on four occasions on the ATP World Tour with Ferrer leading, 3-1. Isner won their last meeting in the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters Series event in Paris in 2011 and the two players have never faced each other on clay.

Sam Querrey is then scheduled to face Nicolas Almagro in the final singles rubber. Querrey and Almagro have faced each other two times this year—at the ATP Masters Series events in Indian Wells and Rome, with Almagro winning both meetings. They have played each other five times overall with Almagro leading, 3-2. Querrey is playing in his first Davis Cup tie since the 2010 World Group Playoff in Colombia.
