US Open quarter-finalist Juan Del Potro, nursing a problem left wrist, has decided to play through the pain in Argentina’s Davis Cup World group semi-final against the Czech Re public at Buenos Aires. Delpo is counting on the support of fans in the stands at the clay date to see him through.
He will open the tie for the 2011 finalists who have never won the Cup, facing Czech Radek Stepanek, who played the US Open final last weekend in doubles. Argentine Juan Monaco and Tomas Berdych meet in the second singles. In doubles, the hosts will send Carlos Berlocq and Eduardo Schwank against Ivo Minar and Lukas Rosol.
Del Potro said the he had decided to play and will count on the massive support of home fans to somehow carry him through. “I’ll be supported by the people, I”ll make the effort and give it my best,” said the world number eight, who has had his wrist worry since before the US Open.
Del Potro had been told by doctors to rest his wrist for a fortnight, but he is ignoring their advice to try and win the tie. Argentina are hoping to reach a fifth Davis final.
“I hope my wrist is okay. I’m still feeling little pain but I will still try to manage it and play my best tennis here is Buenos Aires . Sometimes you get more energy to play these kinds of matches. The crowd will be fantastic for me and that will help me to fight.”
