Argentina might find itself missing another main protagonist in the weekend Davis Cup semi-final with the visiting Czech Republic as Juan Del Potro struggles to recover from a lingering right wrist injury in time to take the the court.
The 2011 finalist who lost to Spain is already without David Nalbandian, also unfit with a chest muscle strain which forced him to withdraw from the US Open.
Del Potro saw a specialist in the days before the Open, then played in the major, going out in the quarter finals.
He has yet to make an appearance on the clay of Parque Roca. Doctors have told del Potro that he needs a fortnight of rest on his wrist – not exactly the news he was hoping to hear.
But the No. 8 intends to try and make a stand. “The doctor has recommended me to rest for 15 days, but I’ll do the impossible to play against Czech Re public ,” Del Potro said in a Tweet. The player has already been through surgery on his right wrist in 2010 only months after winning the US Open.
Argentine captain Martin Jaite remains can only wait and see what will happen against the Czechs featuring New York semi-finalist Tomas Berdych and doubles finalist Radek Stepanek. “Juan Martin wants to be there,” said Jaite, “He will train for days and will decide what to do.”
In case of Del Potro’s absence, Leonardo Mayer is likely to be thrown into the battle.
