Tashkent (Wednesday)
Singles – Second Round: (2) Urszula Radwanska def. Vitalia Diatchenko 6-2 6-2
Urszula Radwanska needs one more win to defend her points, but this should keep her around #45.
Singles – Second Round: Irina-Camelia Begu def. (3) Alize Cornet 6-4 6-1
That makes it three of the top four seeds out of Tashkent; only Urszula Radwanska is left. To be sure, Alize Cornet lost to one of the toughest unseeded players here. But she loses her chance to climb; she will remain just above #50.
Singles – Second Round: (5) Alexandra Cadantu def. (WC) Sabina Sharipova 1-6 6-3 6-3
For the second straight year, Sabina Sharipova is out in the second round. Still, for the second straight year, she was the last local standing.
Singles – Second Round: (6) Bojana Jovanovski def. Eleni Daniilidou 6-3 6-7(6-8) 6-3
Eleni Daniilidou loses forty points; she will fall to around #110.
Singles – Second Round: (7) Alexandra Panova def. Misaki Doi 6-4 6-4
Alexandra Panova just fell below #80; one more win would move her back above that mark.
Singles – Second Round: (8) Galina Voskoboeva def. (Q) Anna Chakvetadze 6-1 6-3
After three qualifying matches, one suspects Anna Chakvetadze ran out of gas. But this makes a wide-open tournament even more wide-open.
Singles – Second Round: Eva Birnerova def. Karin Knapp 6-2 6-2
This is pretty shocking (and depressing for top seed Monica Niculescu): Karin Knapp beat Niculescu — and then went down this way to Eva Birnerova. To be sure, Birnerova likes this place a lot; she was a finalist here last year (and hadn’t made a quarterfinal since — until now).
Singles – Second Round: (Q) Donna Vekic def. Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino 6-2 6-2
Pretty good for Donna Vekic: Her opening round win was her first WTA victory, and now she is in her first quarterfinal.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Begu/Niculescu def. Ivakhnenko/Kozlova 6-3 4-6 12-10 (Match TB)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Kania/Pekhova def. Kichenok/Kichenok 2-6 6-3 10-5 (Match TB)
Out go last year’s finalists. The Kichenoks will fall out of the doubles Top Hundred.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Kania/Pekhova def. Kichenok/Kichenok 2-6 6-3 10-5 (Match TB)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Amanmuradova/Diatchenko def. Kalashnikova/Sirotkina 6-2 6-2
Quebec City (Full Tuesday results)
Singles – First Round: (4) Aleksandra Wozniak def. Elena Vesnina 6-2 4-6 6-3
It was frankly quite surprising to see that this lasted only an hour and fifty minutes; it seemed as if it lasted forever as Elena Vesnina did her oh-so-frequent act of fading in and out. For Aleksandra Wozniak, this brings no points, but if she can win one more match, she will probably hit the Top Forty.
Singles – First Round: (6) Barbora Zahlavova Strycova def. Marie-Eve Pelletier 7-6(7-2) 6-1
Barbora Zahlavova Strycova has champion’s points to defend, so she will need a lot more than this to stay close to the Top Sixty.
Singles – First Round: (7) Petra Martic def. (LL) Jessica Pegula 6-4 7-5
This was for Jessica Pegula only her second WTA main draw; she is still looking for her first win.
Singles – First Round: (8) Lucie Hradecka def. (Q) Maria Sanchez 6-4 7-6(7-5)
This by itself probably won’t move Lucie Hradecka much, but if she can win her next match, she might well rise above #55.
Singles – First Round: Anna Tatishvili def. Sesil Karatantcheva 7-5 1-6 6-1
Anna Tatishvili would have been seeded had this week’s rankings been used; indeed, if she can win one more match, she’ll hit the Top Fifty.
Singles – First Round: Melanie Oudin def. Irina Falconi 7-5 7-6(8-6)
One more win would probably suffice to put Melanie Oudin in the Top Hundred.
Singles – First Round: Petra Rampre def. Michelle Larcher def. Brito 6-2 1-6 6-3
Petra Rampre, who has been around forever but who has spend most of her life in Challengers, picks up only her second WTA win (the first was at Bogota this year).
Singles – First Round: Mirjana Lucic def. (Q) Heidi El Tabakh 6-4 3-6 7-6(7-5)
This was your typical no-lead-is-safe match. Mirjana Lucic trailed in the tiebreak, then ended just strong enough. That lets her defend her points. If she can win one more, she’ll rise to just below #100.
Singles – First Round: (Q) Lauren Davis def. Stephanie Dubois 7-5 6-3
This is not an upset; Stephanie Dubois has been sinking like a stone, and is now ranked well behind Lauren Davis. And that gap will likely widen.
Singles – First Round: (Q) Kristina Mladenovic def. Madison Brengle 6-4 6-7(6-8) 6-4
Here again we have a qualifier ranked much higher than her opponent with direct entry. And Madison Brengle doesn’t have much in the way of weapons; she relies mostly on getting balls back. The amazing thing is that Kristina Mladenovic didn’t overwhelm her faster.
Singles – First Round: (WC) Eugenie Bouchard def. Grace Min 6-4 6-3
Eugenie Bouchard continues to look like the future of Canadian tennis, although she remains below #150.
Doubles – First Round: (3) Malek/Mladenovic def. Glatch/Tatishvili 4-6 6-3 10-8 (Match TB)
Quebec City (Partial Wednesday results)
Singles – Second Round: (Q) Lauren Davis def. (2/WC) Yanina Wickmayer 6-1 6-1
There isn’t much we can say about this except that Belgium’s new #1 Yanina Wickmayer (the new #1 because, of course, Kim Clijsters is retired) is very hard to figure out these days. She loses her shot at a return to the Top 25.
Singles – Second Round: (3) Mona Barthel def. Petra Rampre 6-2 6-1
Nothing that counts yet for Mona Barthel, but if she wins her next match, she will rise to probably #33.
Singles – Second Round: (Q) Kristina Mladenovic def. Annika Beck 4-6 6-4 6-3
At this rate, Kristina Mladenovic could be Top Hundred pretty soon. She is now about fifty points away.
Doubles – First Round: (1) Rosolska/Watson def. (WC) Dubois/El Tabakh 6-2 6-2
Doubles – First Round: Dabrowski/Riske def. (2) Dekmeijere/Martic 2-6 6-3 10-4 (Match TB)
Doubles – First Round: Pegula/Sanchez def. (4) Lee-Waters/Moulton-Levy 7-5 4-6 10-4 (Match TB)
A tough day for seeds — perhaps not surprising in such a weak field.
