Novak Djokovic fears that inspired opponent Andy Murray could be on the warpath as the Scot rides momentum from his Olympic gold medal to a possible first Grand Slam title when he faces the Serb in the delayed men’s title match at the US Open.
With weather putting the contest back a day for the fifth year in a row, Djokovic is cautious as he takes a 27-match win streak on hardcourt at the majors into the final.
Murray had gone down in four finals at the majors, including to Djokovic at the Australian Open in 2011 and Roger Federer here in 2008. Murray beat Djokovic in their last meeting, the Olympic semi-finals.
“Out matches have been very close with only small margins deciding the winner,” said the Serb who will stand second ahead of Murray in the net ATP rankings. “That’s expected in a way, because we have similar games.
“We are big rivals and we have been in top of the men’s game for a long time, so we know each other really well. I guess there is no clear favorite.”
Djokovic, winner of five Grand Slams, knows that Murray will be keen to win, “Mentally he is more aggressive on the court right now. This is his fifth Grand Slam final. We all knew that he’s definitely a contender to win one.
“It just wasn’t to be in the last four for him. He’ll be very motivated to win the title. But me too. Also I will try to win.
