US Open doubles titlists Bob and Mike Bryan say that they have managed to stay out of the dispute between their father, Wayne, and their former Davis Cup Captain, Patrick McEnroe.
Wayne Bryan, who is a teaching pro and promoter, wrote a long, widely circulated letter that addressed dozens of issues in U.S. tennis last spring. He heavily criticized the USTA Player Development for having 10 and unders being forced to play tournaments that only use large, green balls. He also stated that there are too many foreigners given scholarships to play collegiate tennis; and discussed what the USTA’s role should be in his business, which is coaching.
In response, USTA Player Development chief McEnroe wrote a letter of his own where he took Bryan to task for not having a long term vision and for exaggerating the extent of the USTA involvement in private coaches work lives.
“We stay out of it,” said Mike Bryan. “We have a big loyalty to both guys. We love Pat and we love obviously my dad. My dad is very passionate about the way he feels because he owned a club and did a tremendous job with his junior program for so many years. But Pat has his views. I’m sure they’re both great. We definitely read the blogs and the e mails and get a kick out of it.”
