The Bryan brothers have made more tennis history at the US Open, with their fourth title in New York pulling the pair level with the all-time best team in the game. Americans Bob and Mike defeated Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-4 to join John Newcombe and Tony Roche as the most successful pairing ever to play the sport. They passed the 11 titles of Aussies Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge.
The Californian twins, aged 34, also took the Flushing Meadows honors in 2005, 2008 and 2010. They also own five from the Australian Open, Wimbledon in 2006 and 0211 and the French title nine years ago.
The New York victory was revenge for a loss in the Flushing Meadows final a year ago to India ‘s Paes and Czech Stepanek. “It’s unbelievable to tie the record. It won’t sink in for a while. We had to play our best to win today,” said Mike Bryan.
Bob Bryan said that achieving another record was far from their minds in the heat of battle. “We were just thinking about playing a good match and executing the scouting report our coach gave us and winning our home Slam in front of all these fans that were pumping us up the whole day.
“We’re extremely pumped to leave 2012 with a Grand Slam title. I think it’s eight years in a row now we’ve at least got away with one of them, which we’re very proud of.”
