Andy Murray was guaranteed some VIP support from his fellow Scots in today’s US Open final against Novak Djokovic. Manchester United’s most successful manager Sir Alex Ferguson along with Sir Sean Connery, the former actor most famed for playing James Bond, were ready to lead the cheer leaders along with Murray’s mother Judy.
Murray was also joined during center court practice by actor Kevin Spacey and the 25 year-old was more than pleased to see the two Scottish knights when they walked unannounced into his press conference following the semi-final win over Tomas Berdych,
“I’m a huge James Bond fan and I love football as well,” said the third seed. “Sir Alex is one of the most successful managers of all time and both of them are from Scotland , so to have them both here was very nice.
“They are going to be here for the final as well so I hope I can do it for them both.”
Murray did however berate his mother for smelling of wine and she insisted it was only because Sir Alex, whose Manchester United football team had the weekend off from the English Premier League, had encouraged her to drink.
Meanwhile the Murray’s home town in Scotland was gearing up for a long night as the U.S. Open final was delayed until Monday for a fifth consecutive year because of bad weather over the weekend.
People in Dunblane have applied for extended opening hours to ensure Murray fans get to see the final that will not start until late in the evening in Britain . Alan Duncan, landlord of the Dunblane Hotel, has had his opening hours extended to 1am and said: “We’ll be showing the final as always, but celebrations will depend on whether he wins or not.
“I think the whole town will be in a celebratory mood if he wins. He’s a credit to his community, he conducts himself very well and from speaking to the patrons of the bar, they’re all extremely proud of him and wish him all the best.”
David Symon, manager of the Village Inn, added that the champagne was on ice as locals keep their fingers crossed for victory. He said: “We’ll probably open some bottles of champagne. We’ve got some in the fridge so it’s on ice, it all depends on what the outcome is.
“He’s done really well, we will be showing the match on the big screen and we hope he wins. We’ll be celebrating with strawberries and cream and champagne and getting the music pumping.”
