Singles – Semifinal: (1) Victoria Azarenka def. (3) Maria Sharapova 3-6 6-2 6-4
Victoria Azarenka was a set and a break down in this match. But the player who used to struggle in pressure situations has turned into a player who really seems to like being on top.
In the short term, this makes no difference. Azarenka had already clinched the #1 ranking, and Sharapova was guaranteed to be #2. And Azarenka has a very tough final ahead of her, and she will go into it tired after this marathon. But she really appears to want that year-end #1 spot….
Singles – Semifinal: (4) Serena Williams def. (10) Sara Errani 6-1 6-2
In contrast to the preceding, there was very little about this match that was interesting except for the fact that they had to hurry due to the threat of rain. Serena Williams came out and overpowered Sara Errani. Errani will still rise to #7.
Serena will not rise this week; even a title will leave her at #4, which is where she came in. But it would make her a very strong #4, only a few hundred points behind #3 Agnieszka Radwanska. A title would give Serena a real shot at ending the year #1 — if she decides to play enough….
