Roger Federer is trying to digest one of his worst losses of a successful summer season and said he needs to re-assess his game after exiting in the US Open quarter-finals to Tomas Berdych.
It was the second time the Czech had ambushed the No. 1 late in a major after doing it at Wimbledon two years ago. Federer was coming off a seventh Wimbledon title, an Olympic silver medal and the Cincinnati Masters title before crashing in New York .
“I’ve got to go back to the drawing board from here and see what’s really the priority,” said Federer, who had been bidding for an 18th Grand Slam trophy but still retains a strong grip on the top ATP ranking.
“The goal (No. 1 again after winning Wimbledon ) has been achieved, but now this is disappointing for me. We’ll see where I go from now and if I go to Davis Cup or not, about what’s to come for the remainder for the season.”
Federer has been picked for the Swiss side to play next weekend in Amsterdam against the Netherlands , in a Davis Cup tie whose winner remains in the World group. But he has left his options open on participation.
“This is obviously is a setback, but again, season is not over. I hope to finish strong at the end, and particularly in the indoor season.”
