Doubles – Final: (2) Bryan/Bryan def. (5) Paes/Stepanek 6-3 6-4Â
So which is a bigger number, one or twelve?
No, that isn’t one of our obscure mathematical references. It’s a simple question of which number the Bryans like better, their new #1 ranking or their dozenth Slam.
The win lets them break the team Slam record held by Woodbridge/Woodforde — and they definitely knew it; Mike Bryan said, “We looked up to the Woodies, and to steal all their records is unbelievable, because we idolize those guys. They’re one of the reasons we play doubles. Just to be mentioned with those guys is pretty special. But to have a huge record like the Grand Slam record is really cool.”
They still don’t have the individual record, to be sure, but they don’t seem to be slowing down much, either — this is their sixth title of 2012. We wouldn’t want to bet on them breaking that record, but we wouldn’t want to bet against it, really, either.
And, as a side effect, they regain the #1 ranking — and they are well ahead of Mirnyi/Nestor; they are in very good shape to earn the year-end #1. They were 700 points ahead of Mirnyi/Nestor in the Race coming in, and now that lead extends to thousands of points. They haven’t clinched the year-end #1, but it would be no surprise if they clinched well before Paris, let alone London.
Paes and Stepanek failed to win their second Slam of the season, and are still only #4 in the Race — but Paes is back in the Top Five and Stepanek hits the Top Ten. And they should be good for London. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(3) Bryan………….10020
