After defeating Roger Federer in the quarterfinals of the US Open, Tomas Berdych says that a mid-season break helped him be ready of a strong performance at the year’s final major. “I took a break after Wimbledon ,” he said. “Because after the first, I would say, half of the season, which was quite hard for me and I felt quite tired then. You know, I made it like as a decision.”
After losing in the first round of Wimbledon, Berdych also lost his opening match at the Olympics and went out in the second round of both the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters.
But, he said, he did not doubt his decision to take some rest. After that, he reached the final of Winston-Salem the week before the US Open, holding match points in the final, and now finds himself in the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time since 2010.
“Always everybody comes to say that when you’re not playing extremely well in the first tournament after that that it was a mistake and why he did that, and, you know, all these things like this way,” he said. “But, you know, I still knew that there was my decision, and that’s for my tennis. I did a good preparation for it and actually [this is] the results, so, I did it. I’m happy that I made it, yeah.”
