U. S. Open
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Maria Sharapova def. (11) Marion Bartoli 3-6 6-3 6-4
Maria Sharapova has good reason to be grateful for Tuesday’s rain. Because it let her come back very strong. Sharapova had been down 4-0 in the first set, so it was too late to save that, but she was fine after that. She rises to #2, once again dropping Agnieszka Radwanska to #3. Bartoli will be no better than #10.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) Serena Williams def. (12) Ana Ivanovic 6-1 6-3
In the second set of this, Ana Ivanovic seemed to be constantly on the verge of starting to threaten Serena Williams, without ever quite making it. Which means — still no Top Ten spot. She will be #12. The Top Ten is closed, and Marion Bartoli will have the #10 spot. Serena is still at #5 in safe points, but if she can make the final, she will retain the #4 ranking she came in with. And she has a pretty nice draw for the semifinal:
Singles – Quarterfinal: (10) Sara Errani def. (20) Roberta Vinci 6-2 6-4
Best friends these two may be, but you’d never know it from the way Sara Errani mauled Roberta Vinci. Errani should rise to a career-high #7 (although probably no higher, since she faces Serena next); Vinci will have to settle for #15.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Lisicki/Peng 6-3 6-1
Huber/Raymond really do need to watch out. Hlavackova/Hradecka are threatening to take the year-end #3 and #4 spots from them (expect Errani and Vinci to be the year-end Top Two). This is especially impressive given that Andrea Hlavackova has a bad hip.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (8) Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez def. (4) Kirilenko/Petrova 7-5 3-6 7-6(7-5)
It’s amazing how Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez keep winning these nailbiters. This keeps Maria Kirilenko from clinching her Top Ten spot; Llagostera Vives will pass her if she makes the final. Martinez Sanchez could also make the Top Ten with a title. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(3) ERRANI ………….8520*
2..(4) VINCI …………. 8520*
3..(1) HUBER …………. 7955
3..(1) RAYMOND ……….. 7955
5..(5) HRADECKA ………..6670*
6..(6) HLAVACKOVA ………6590*
7..(7) PETROVA ……….. 5355
8..(9) SREBOTNIK ……… 5270
9.(12) VESNINA ……….. 5050
10.(11) KIRILENKO ……… 5035
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (16) Hsieh/Medina Garrigues def. Chuang/Zhang 6-2 6-1
Anabel Medina Garrigues has a pretty good doubles history, but that was with Virginia Ruano Pascual, and it was on clay. This is a pretty big surprise these days. This has been quite a doubles event for Spaniards!
Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: (4) Peschke/Matkowski def. (1) Huber/Mirnyi 7-5 6-2
Mixed rankings say that Huber/Mirnyi were badly over-seeded. This seems to support that. And it means they will probably be seeded even lower next time.
Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: Makarova/Soares def. (7) Hradecka/Cermak 6-3 6-3
Mixed rankings would have demoted Hradecka/Cermak, too. In fact, they would have been below Makarova/Soares (who were the #14 team in the field; Hradecka/Cermak were only the #16 team in the draw). So this was a day where Mixed rankings were pretty informative. As for which team they expect to win the final… Peschke/Matkowski have a combined ranking of 27, Makarova/Soares of 41. And while there isn’t much Slam-winning experience on either team, Peschke did manage to win Wimbledon last year.
