Maria Sharapova has managed to keep a huge personal decision private for months, with the glamorous Russian third seed finally revealing a huge change in her personal life. The news came out at the US Open, with the highest-earning woman in world sport calmly admitting that her engagement to Serbian basketballer Sasha Vujacic ended last spring as the pair split up.
“I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question, but nobody did directly,” said Sharapova after reaching the US Open fourth round. “I have never really been the person to announce things. I never announced when we were together or never announced that we were engaged. I never have in any of my previous relationships, as well.”
The Russian called the decision “obviously challenging from both of our ends.”
“It was a really nice period of time for both of us, but our career schedules just made it extremely difficult to see each other with the traveling, and especially his career move to Turkey. He wasn’t able to travel much and he wasn’t home one time during the ten months that he was in Turkey, so that made it extremely difficult.
“We still have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. Still would love to call him as a friend. We spent really great years together.”
