Three-time former US Open champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan were two points from defeat, but a clutch ‘tweener from Mike inspired the Americans to a 6-7(6), 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky on Monday in New York.
The ‘tweener and subsequent forehand winner saw the Bryans go up 6-5 in the second-set tie-break and a lob winner from Bob Bryan on the next point levelled the match for the Americans. They capitalised on their momentum to go up a break in the fourth game of the final set and went onto claim victory in just under two hours.
The 34-year-old Bryans came into Flushing Meadows in a rich vein of form, winning gold at the London 2012 Olympics (d. Llodra/Tsonga) before winning the title at the Rogers Cup in Toronto (d. Granollers/Lopez). They are bidding for their first Grand Slam title of the season, having finished runners-up at the Australian Open (l. to Paes/Stepanek) and Roland Garros (l. to Mirnyi/Nestor).
No. 15 seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares rallied from a set down to defeat Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(3) in two hours and 23 minutes. The Austrian/Brazilian pairing are playing together for the third time after making their debut with a runner-up showing at the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad (l. to Lindstedt/Tecau) earlier in the summer.
