U. S. Open
Singles – Fourth Round: (1) R Federer def. (23) M Fish Walkover
Nice news for Roger Federer, who of course wants all the rest he can get. But a tough week for American veterans — Roddick retiring, Fish out. Still, Fish defended his points — and should rise from #25 to probably #23.
There was no official explanation offered for Fish’s withdrawal other than “health reasons,” but word is that there are indications he is having more heart problems.
Singles – Fourth Round: (3) A Murray (15) M Raonic 6-4 6-4 6-2
Just about what you expected, right? Andy Murray moves a little closer to Rafael Nadal, but needs more to reach #3. Milos Raonic is at #15 in safe points, although he might still fall to #16.
Singles – Fourth Round: (6) T Berdych def. (11) N Almagro 7-6(7-4) 6-4 6-1
All those points Nicolas Almagro added? No help. He remains #12. Tomas Berdych is still stuck at #7, too — although one more win would take him past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to #6. The good news and the bad news is, that win will have to come against Roger Federer.
Singles – Fourth Round: (12) M Cilic def. M Klizan 7-5 6-4 6-0
It was a Slam to remember for Martin Klizan: Not only did he make the fourth round, he put himself in the Top Forty (probably #39). He was, in fact, the last non-Top-Thirty player standing. He’s doing a lot better than Marin Cilic: Even though Cilic is in the quarterfinal, he still hasn’t moved above #13! If he can make the semifinal, though, he should hit the Top Ten.
Doubles – Third Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (16) S Gonzalez/Lipsky 6-7(6-8) 7-6(7-5) 6-3
This was a day when the doubles tended to be a lot more exciting than the singles. The Bryans came within a few points of forfeiting their chance to regain the #1 ranking — but they still have a shot. They need only win three more matches….
Doubles – Third Round: (8) Granollers/M Lopez def. Delgado/Skupski 6-2 6-4
This appears to put Marcel Granollers in the Top Fifteen. Marc Lopez is still at #8 in safe points; he could go as high as #5 with a title. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) Mirnyi………….9260
1..(1) Nestor………….9260
3..(3) Bryan…………..8380
3..(3) Bryan…………..8380
5..(5) Lindstedt……….6330
5..(5) Tecau…………..6330
7..(9) Paes……………5695
8.(10) LopezM………….5220
9..(7) Fyrstenberg……..4815
10..(8) Matkowski……….4680
Doubles – Third Round: Benneteau/Mahut def. (12) Dodig/Melo 7-6(7-2) 6-3
Doubles – Third Round: (15) Peya/Soares def. Cermak/Mertinak 6-7(5-7) 6-3 7-6(7-3)
Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Huber/Mirnyi def. Llagostera Vives/Marrero 6-1 7-5
Mixed rankings would demote Huber/Mirnyi a lot, but they would still be ahead of the Spaniards.
Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (7) Hradecka/Cermak def. (3) Vesnina/Paes 7-6(7-2) 7-5
And, once again, Vesnina/Paes fail to win a Slam. They’re the most consistent Mixed team out there, which is why they top our Mixed rankings, but they just don’t win the big matches.
Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Peschke/Matkowski def. Mirza/Fleming 6-3 7-5
These two teams were exactly even in the mixed doubles rankings. Surely they could have managed a match tiebreak at least….
Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: Makarova/Soares def. Rodionova/Rojer 4-6 6-3 10-7 (Match TB)
