U. S. Open
Singles – Third Round: (1) Victoria Azarenka def. (28) Zheng Jie 6-0 6-1
Agnieszka Radwanska should perhaps just save herself some agony and forget about making it to #1 this week. Victoria Azarenka isn’t going to let it happen….
Singles – Third Round: (3) Maria Sharapova def. (WC) Mallory Burdette 6-1 6-1
Maria Sharapova is getting close to #2 Agnieszka Radwanska, but she still needs at least two more wins to catch up.
Singles – Third Round: (5) Petra Kvitova def. Pauline Parmentier 6-4 6-4
Petra Kvitova is raising the bar for Serena Williams. As of now, Serena needs a final to keep the #4 ranking.
Singles – Third Round: (7) Samantha Stosur def. (31) Varvara Lepchenko 7-6(7-5) 6-2
Ten straight wins here for Samantha Stosur — but she is still only #10 in safe points. Varvara Lepchenko loses her Top Twenty chance, but it appears she will be making the Top 25 for the first time.
Singles – Third Round: Laura Robson def. (9) Li Na 6-4 6-7(5-7) 6-2
It really is a new model Laura Robson since the Olympics. She was playing at the top of her game, and Li Na was just a little bit off…. Li will be no better than #7, which incidentally all but guarantees that Angelique Kerber will stay at #6.
And Li is likely to be falling hereafter. She announced, after this, that she is taking time off. She sounded very, very burned out.
Singles – Third Round: (11) Marion Bartoli def. (WC) Kristina Mladenovic 6-2 6-4
Still no guarantee of a return to the Top Ten for Marion Bartoli, but it certainly looks like the way to bet.
Singles – Third Round: (19) Nadia Petrova def. (15) Lucie Safarova 6-4 7-5
No chance for Lucie Safarova to make the Top Fifteen after this. But Nadia Petrova is now guaranteed to make the Top Twenty.
Singles – Third Round: Anna Tatishvili def. Mandy Minella 7-5 6-0
Anna Tatishvili is now just below the Top Fifty. One more win would put her in.
Doubles – Second Round: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Gajdosova/Rosolska 6-2 7-5
Huber/Raymond stay in the hunt for #1, but…
Doubles – Second Round: (2) Errani/Vinci def. Craybas/Scheepers 6-4 6-2
…Errani/Vinci are now only 55 points behind them, and the Italians have already surpassed their eleventh event score; Huber/Raymond have not. What that means is that Errani/Vinci, if they can win their next match, need only last as long as Huber/Raymond to take the #1 ranking. A very tight contest indeed.
Doubles – Second Round: (3) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Barthel/Malek 7-6(7-1) 6-3
Hlavackova/Hradecka have no real chance of rising above #5/#6, but there isn’t much chance that they’ll fall, either.
Doubles – Second Round: (5) King/Shvedova def. Bratchikova/Panova 6-7(1-7) 7-6(7-4) 6-4
King/Shvedova keep alive their Top Ten hopes, but they will definitely need more than this.
Doubles – Second Round: (6) Makarova/Vesnina def. (WC) Keys/Pegula 6-3 4-6 7-6(7-4)
Another step toward the Top Ten for Elena Vesnina, whose chances now look quite good. Ekaterina Makarova needs at least two more wins to hit the Top Fifteen. We show the Top Ten as follows:
1..(1) HUBER …………. 7955*
1..(1) RAYMOND ……….. 7955*
3..(3) ERRANI ………….7900*
4..(4) VINCI …………. 7900*
5..(5) HRADECKA ………..6050*
6..(6) HLAVACKOVA ………5970*
7..(9) SREBOTNIK ……… 5270
8.(12) VESNINA ……….. 5050*
9..(7) PETROVA ……….. 5015*
10.(11) KIRILENKO ……… 4695*
Doubles – Second Round: (9) Kops-Jones/Spears def. Husarova/Rybarikova 6-2 6-4
Doubles – Second Round: Kerber/Paszek def. (10) Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova 6-2 6-3
Pretty stunning, considering how rarely Kerber and Paszek play doubles.
Doubles – Second Round: (11) Goerges/Peschke def. Voracova/Zakopalova 6-3 6-4
One more win and Kveta Peschke defends her points, but she needs at least two more to return to the Top Ten.
Doubles – Second Round: Lisicki/Peng def. (12) Rodionova/Voskoboeva 6-2 6-1
Doubles – Second Round: (WC) Williams/Williams def. (15) Jans-Ignacik/Mladenovic 6-4 6-0
Good to see the Sisters still going all-out after Venus lost in singles.
Doubles – Second Round: (16) Hsieh/Medina Garrigues def. Dushevina/Tanasugarn 6-4 6-4
Doubles – Second Round: Chuang/Zhang def. Birnerova/Oprandi 7-5 7-5
Mixed Doubles – First Round: (1) Huber/Mirnyi def. Min/Klahn 6-3 6-2
Mixed Doubles – First Round: (2) Raymond/M Bryan def. Makarova/Soarez 6-1 7-5
Mixed Doubles – First Round: B Bryan/Clijsters def. Falconi/Johnson 6-2 6-2
This gives us a truly interesting situation: The Bryans will be facing each other — and the match could be the very last in the career of Kim Clijsters!
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Llagostera Vives/Marrero def. Melichar/Battistone 7-6(7-3) 6-3
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Spears/Lipsky def. Benesova/Melzer 6-4 6-3
A big, big upset based on mixed rankings — but Jurgen Melzer is in a terrible slump, and Iveta Benesova is slumping a little bit also.
Mixed Doubles – First Round: Voskoboeva/Bracciali def. Zahlavova Strycova/Polasek 6-2 5-7 10-6 (Match TB)
