Day 3 marked the end for all five women qualifiers who went into action. With the top half of the women’s draw complete through the second round ten of the sixteen slots are held by seeded players
Wild card American Mallory Burdette is the lowest ranked player left in the upper half on the strength of her victory over Lucie Hradecka.
The only other pairing not to feature at least one seeded player is the match between Mandy Minella and Anna Tatishvili. Minella ended the run of qualifier Krystyna Pliskova in straight sets.
The men however pulled a clean sweep in their first round matches. The only blemish was lucky loser Florent Serra falling to Juan Martin Del Potro in the Louis Armstrong Stadium. Serra got the call this morning when David Nalbandian withdrew the night before. Showing no sighs of his ailing wrists Del Potro dispatched of Serra in straight sets. Still the call-up got Florent 10 more ATP points and about $15,000 over his qualie finalist take.
Even though entering as a qualie Igor Sijsling followed his ranking (77) and dispatched of Daniel Gimeno-Traver (102) in straight sets. His next match wonít be that easy as he runs into #4 seed and 5th in the world, David Ferrer. The two have met once and Ferrer wreck Igor 6-0, 6-1.
American Bradley Klahn pulled off the upset of the day beating (36) Jurgen Meltzer in grueling 5 set match. Americans overall went 7 -1 on the day and Klahn capped it off with a thriller on Court 17. Meltzer just missed out being seeded but could not overcome the never say die attitude this qualie has show over the last two weeks. Next up for this giant killer is Richard Gasquet. Gasquet has been playing excellent tennis of late with a final appearance at the Rogers Cup earlier in the month.
The third male qualie through om Day 3 is Grega Zemlja (100) with his victory over fellow qualie Ricardo Mello. Not bad so far for Zemlja as this win secures him 70 ATP so with taking into consideration he gets 25 for making it through. Even Mello gets 35 points over the normal 10 for a first round lose. An added bonus of making it through the qualie. Next up for Zemlja is Cedrik-Michael Stebe (97) who ousted the #29 seed Victor Troika. This is probably the best chance, at least on paper, for a qualifier to break into the third round. The two haven’t met since 2008 and in that match Zemlja won in straight sets.
6 of the remaining qualifiers see action tomorrow with the best chance for advancement belonging to Johanna Korda in her match against Olga Govortsova out on court 7. Tim Smyczek will be on Court 11 at 11:00 AM EST vs. (17 seed) Kei Nishkori. Jimmy Wang faces off on Court 13 in the second match there versus (16 seed ) Gilles Simon. Lara Arruabarrena-vecino goes 1st thing on Court 17 versus the #30 seed Jelena Janovic.
Olga Puchkova gets Kiki Bertens on the final match on Court 13. Bertens is coming off a big win over Christina McHale. Tatjana Malek gets to play in Louis Armstrong when she faces Sloan Stephens in the 3rd match of the day at that venue.
