“I just believe in myself a lot more and I just know that whatever I put my mind to and I focus on and I really

want to do, I do it. I decided that tennis is what I love and that’s what I really want to do. So I give 100 percent

all the time, practice, matches. I think you only have that one moment when you’re playing. Whenever it is to

work hard, do that extra bit, I think I’ve really focused on that, and I think that’s helped me come a really long

way.”

— Sloane Stephens, after upsetting No. 22 Francesca Schiavone, on her improvement since last year

“There is no acceptable result. You play your second round, try to win your second round. You go as far as

you want, or as far as you can. I don’t think we think of it in the context of what’s acceptable and what’s not.

You play a match to try and win a match.”

— Andy Roddick, following his first round win, on what would be an acceptable result at this year’s Open

“I’m definitely better than last fall. Last fall I didn’t play any tournaments and I was at home watching on TV. So

there’s a big difference between watching on TV and being in a tournament. For me it’s very rewarding, it’s

very exciting. It’s like [coming] full circle to be back out here, winning matches, moving forward and getting

better. That’s good for me.”

— Venus Williams, after her first round win, comparing her health this year to last

“You always want to go in and do your best no matter what’s happening out there. I tried. I didn’t succeed to

play well. I made too many errors. It’s unfortunate because it’s a huge tournament, a tournament you want to

play well in.”

— Caroline Wozniacki, who has reached at least the semis here the last three years, after her first round loss
