Roger Federer has made another successful switch to the carnival-like action of the US Open, with the focused Swiss world No. 1 quietly going about his business of trying to claim a sixth title at the frenetic event
From overpowering fried food smells wafting around the grounds to over-the-top locals at every turn, the final major of the season is truly in-your-face as only New York can make it. Federer has survived well on court during his career, winning all 22 of his Ashe stadium night matches, including his 2012 opener over American punching bag Donald Young. just off a near-record 17-match loss streak.
But Federer is simply going with the flow and keeping a discreet distance from as many non-tennis factors as possible. “The distractions are big here just because you almost enjoy your time too much,” said the 17-time Grand Slam champion.
“Not meaning you go party, but you do too many things maybe you shouldn’t be doing. Maybe when you come on court your mind is still elsewhere. I do feel that, here; whereas in Wimbledon, you rent your house, you’re full on tennis. All you do is you watch tennis, you eat and breathe tennis.
“When you come here, you go out at night for dinners, you catch up with friends. You do maybe watch things on TV from time to time. There’s many more things you can follow and do, so that brings challenges automatically with it.”
Federer seems to have his adaptation system down pat, resulting in five straight trophies from 2004-08. “I’ve never lost first round and that’s helped me feel really comfortable in New York. But I love it here. The distractions are a challenge, the wind, the humidity.
“The early matches, the really late, late matches, because it can get extremely late here, like in Australia, too. That takes some getting used to.”
