Maria Sharapova can almost taste the difference in marketing terms between her newly released Sugarpova line of candies and the Lindt Swiss chocolates which Roger Federer been flogging through a series of clever TV ads.
“That’s chocolate,” said Sharapova, third seed at the US Open. “Mine are gummies and gumballs. It’s like, What’s your preference? That’s made in Switzerland ; this is made in Spain . No, a lot of differences.”
Sharapova led a massive media launch of her newest sponsorship line last week, with the pricey goodies being sold in an elite Manhattan sweets shop. The Russian said that developing the concept, finding a manufacturer in Spain and doing the marketing ground work – all while maintaining her tennis career – was a big task.
“I’m just happy that it’s finally over with, I worked on it for a long time. There’s not much to be done from my end in a way except promote it and letting the world know about it.”
And while women are noted for an apparent love of chocolate, Sharapova has taken the high road in that dispute. “It depends what your preference is. I mean, mid-afternoon I’m not a big truffle (Lindt) person; I’m more of a gum girl. But it depends what everybody likes.’
