U. S. Open

Singles – First Round: (3) A Murray def. A Bogomolov Jr. 6-2 6-4 6-1

Andy Murray got off to a rather ugly start in both of the first two sets, but he obviously woke up fast after that. Another 900 points and he’ll catch up with Rafael Nadal….

Singles – First Round: (17) K Nishikori def. G Andreozzi 6-1 6-2 6-4

A long rain delay meant that Kei Nishikori didn’t finish until late in the afternoon, but he was still the first man to finish. And he had nothing to defend, so his chances of rising a spot or two look pretty good.

Singles – First Round: J Sock def. (22) F Mayer 6-3 6-2 3-2, retired

Florian Mayer became the first seed eliminated. And he made the third round last year, so he’ll probably fall a couple of ranking spots.

Singles – First Round: (23) M Fish def. G Soeda 7-6(7-3) 7-6(7-2) 6-3

Again Go Soeda falls short of the Top Fifty. Mardy Fish still needs two more wins to defend his points, but we’d guess this will keep him Top Thirty.

Singles – First Round: (24) M Granollers def. D Kudla 6-3 4-6 6-3 7-6(7-2)

Marcel Granollers needs one more win to defend his points, but gives him pretty good odds of staying Top 25.

Singles – First Round: (25) F Verdasco def. R Machado 6-1 6-2 6-4

Fernando Verdasco now looks safe in the Top Thirty, although he needs one more win to match his result from last year.

Singles – First Round: (32) J Chardy def. F Volandri 6-3 6-4 6-3

Just what one would expect on hardcourts — a very nice draw for Jeremy Chardy. Two more wins would probably put him in the Top Thirty.

Singles – First Round: A Ramos def. R Ginepri 6-7(3-7) 7-5 6-4 6-0

There won’t be many more U. S. Opens for Robby Ginepri at this rate. But Albert Ramos seems sure to be back; this clinches his Top Fifty spot.

Singles – First Round: D Brands def. A Ungur 7-6(7-4) 6-4 7-6(7-5)

We haven’t heard much from Daniel Brands lately, but Adrian Ungur just took a big rankings hit, so even though Brands is a qualifier, this isn’t much of an upset.

Singles – First Round: F Cipolla def. B Kavcic 6-4 7-6(7-5) 3-6 6-3

A minor upset that will leave Blaz Kavcic below #75.

Singles – First Round: I Dodig def. H Moriya 6-0 6-1 6-2

Ivan Dodig fell below #100 three weeks ago, and this won’t get him back, but a lucky draw earns him at least some points….

Singles – First Round: J Blake def. L Lacko 7-5 6-2 3-6 6-3

After a strong start to the year, Lukas Lacko really seems to be fading. Although, to be fair, we’d say that a loss to James Blake at the U. S. Open isn’t too bad, even now.

Singles – First Round: M Ebden def. T Ito 7-6(11-9) 6-3 6-2

Japanese tennis isn’t just about Kei Nishikori. Their second tier has made real strides this year. But not much on this particular Monday….

Singles – First Round: N Davydenko def. G Pella 7-5 3-6 6-4 6-2

Nikolay Davydenko needs one more win to stay Top Fifty. The fact that he struggled so much here is rather disturbing.

Singles – First Round: P Mathieu def. I Andreev 2-6 4-6 7-6(7-1) 7-6(7-4) 6-1

This didn’t do much to help them catch up after two hours of rain delay! But it did give Paul-Henri Mathieu the distinction of being the first person here to come back from two sets down….

Singles – First Round: T Smyczek def. B Reynolds 1-6 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-4

It’s not often that you see a Slam match where both the winner and the loser are going to remain below #125, but that will almost certainly be the outcome here…. We’d guess Tim Smyczek will rise to around #150, which will probably leave him a little below Reynolds.
