WTA No. 1 Victoria Azarenka has joined the tennis watch endorsement sweepstakes – by signing as an ambassador for Japan ‘s Citizen marque. She is joining rivals including Maria Sharapova (Tag-Heuer) and Caroline Wozniacki (Rolex) who got into the lucrative game first, the Belarus belter is determined to bring value to her new marque.
Azarenka will tout the Citizen Eco-Drive model to mark the company’s 20th anniversary. The firm serves as official timekeeper at the US Open,
Azarenka, whose public profile is rising due to her top ranking status, joins fellow endorsers including American footballer Eli Manning, retiring WTA ace Kim Clijsters and women’s golfer Paula Creamer.
Marketing gurus suggest that Azarenka is a perfect fit for Citizen “Vika stands out as a leader of this new generation of athletes. Not only is she a proven champion in her sport, but she is also an upcoming fashion icon as well as a powerful and savvy business person,” said Citizen’s US boss Jeffrey Cohen.
Azarenka said in a statement: “I’m delighted to join the team of international Citizen Eco-Drive Brand Ambassadors. I admire Citizen’s commitment to the international sport of tennis as a sponsor of this hard-court Grand Slam event for two decades.
The Azarenka contract covers endorsement work in North and South America, the UK , Oceania and Asia , with a print, television, digital and in-store campaigns to be launched in coming months.
