Final Results & Opening Match Preview
#1 (77) Igor Sijsling (NED) d. #27 (145) Josselin Ouanna (FRA) 63 64
Main draw opponent – (102) Daniel Gimeno-Traver (ESP) – 1st meeting
(229) Hiroki Moriya (JPN) d. (W)(373) Daniel Kosakowski (USA) 46 76(5) 63
(Kosakowski couldn’t repeat his second round magic succumbing to a polished opponent in
Hiroki whom after dropping the first set took control from there.)
Main draw opponent – (118) Ivan Dodig (CRO) – 1st meeting
(179) Tim Smyczek (USA) d. #3 (89) Ricardas Berankis (LTU) 67(4) 75 64
(Smyczek overcame losing the first game tiebreaker and being down a break in the second
set to overcame the 3rd seed in the final match of the evening.)
Main Draw opponent – (Q)(149) Bobby Reynolds (USA) – 6th meeting
(The two have met 5 times with Reynolds taking four of those matches. The last time
being in Tulsa in 2011 with Reynolds winning handily in straight sets.)
#31 (152) Guido Pella (ARG) d. #4 (96) Lukas Rosol (CZE) 63 63
(Pella played error free tennis and handled an erractic first serve to deny Rosol a repeat of
his French Open heroics)
Main Draw opponent – (48) Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) – 1st meeting
#24 (370) Karol Beck (SVK) d. #5 (95) Roberto Bautista-Agut (ESP) 63 61
Main Draw opponent – #5 seed (6) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) – 1st meeting
#6 (100) Grega Zemlja (SLO) d. (222) Yannick Mertens (BEL) 61 63
(One of only two top ten seeds who were able to advance to the Main draw which he
accomplished without dropping a set in his three qualifying matches)
Main Draw opponent – (Q)(168) Ricardo Mello (BRA) – 1st meeting
(One of two qualie vs. qualie matches meaning at least two will make the Men’s draw
and a $37,000 payday)
(283) Rhyne Williams (USA) d. (199) Peter Gojowczyk (GER) 63 62
(The Tennessee native cruised over a frustated Gojowczyk in straight sets in the first
match of day on Court 17. Despite the big venue, TV coverage and by far the
biggest paycheck of his young career Williams played composed low error tennis to
advance to his first main draw)
Main Draw opponent – #20 seed (21) Andy Roddick (USA) 1st meeting
(One of three qualies who draw a seed and this one should be one of the highlights of the
first round. Expect at least Court 17 maybe even Armstrong Grandstand on this one.)
(195) Maxime Authom (BEL) d. (161) Peter Polansky (CAN) 60 62
Main Draw opponent – (83) Bjorn Phau (GER) 1st meeting
(W)(485) Bradley Klahn (USA) d. #9 (113) Florent Serra (FRA) 64 64
(The 22 year old former Stanford Cardinal takes the lowest ranking into the Main draw and
doubled his salary for the year.)
Main Draw opponent – (36) Jurgen Melzer (AUT) – 1st meeting
(They have at one thing in common, they are both lefties. With now 6 ATP matches under his belt
Bradley has some catching up to the 262 career matches for the veteran from Austria.)
(221) Guido Andreozzi (ARG) d. #29 (148) Sergei Bubka (UKR) 75 64
Main Draw opponent – (36) Jurgen Melzer (AUT) – 1st meeting
#11 (118) Matthias Bachinger (GER) d. (216) Adrian Mannarino (FRA) 76(4) 63
Main Draw opponent – (39) Marcos Baghdatis (CYP) – 4th meeting
(They have net three previous times with Baghdatis winning all. The most recent was in the
Round of 32 at Rotterdam back in February where Bachinger went down in straight sets)
#30 (149) Bobby Reynolds (USA) d. (219) Sergio Gutierrez-Ferrol (ESP) 76(5) 63
(Bobby Reynolds returns to the Main Draw once again. Playing behind a boisterous
home crowd a rattled Guttierrex-Ferrol folded in two sets. Leading the first set 4-1 the crowd urged
Bobby back into the set. Complaining repeatedly to the chair about “Let’s Go Bobby” chants between
each change during the breaker, he mailed it during the second set to allow Reynolds to coast to his
main draw match up with fellow American Tim Smyczek)
Main Draw opponent – (179) Tim Smyczek (USA) – 6th meeting
(Reynolds has owned this match-up against Smyczek only dropping one match in five previous
meetings. But those didn’t take place in Flushing where the pressure of looking at the 2nd round
of the US Open wasn’t at stake)
(183) Jimmy Wang (TPE) d. (216) Marius Copil (ROU) 46 61 76(3)
(A re-match of their meeting earlier in the year at Aptos, CA with Wang repeating his three set win in the most exciting
match of the day. The third set was a qualie classic and one of those where you hated to see someone lose
since both were playing so well. However, in the tiebreaker Wang’s experience showed and with some
late mistakes by Copil and he was able to squeak by to the Main.)
Main Draw opponent – (75) Ivo Karlovic (CRO) – 2nd meeting
(Met once back in 2005 in Marseille and Karlovic won in straight sets. Don’t think it has much bearing seven
years later.)
(168) Ricardo Mello (BRA) d. (173) Rik De Voest (RSA) 61 76(5)
Main Draw opponent – (Q)(100) Grega Zemlja (SLO) – 1st meeting
(Winner of this all qualie 1st rounder will probably face the #29 seed Victor Troicki if he can
get by his 1st round opponent, (99) Cedrik-Marcel Stebe (GER). The two have never faced each other.)
#15 (122) Daniel Brands (GER) d. #25 (143) Dmitry Tursunov (RUS) 65 RTD
(Despite getting through his first two matches Dmitry Tursunov’s injury plagued season continues as he
was forced to retire after the first set allowing the #15 seed to get through to the Main Draw)
Main Draw opponent – (84) Adrian Ungur (ROU) – 1st meeting
(155) Teymuraz Gabashvili (RUS) d. (208) Tsung-Hua Yang (TPE) 64 36 63
Main draw opponnet – (112) Rogerio Dutra Silva (BRA) – 1st meeting
