US Open Qualifier Report – Day 3 – Women’s Draw – 2nd Round

Despite coming into the 2nd round with nine Americans only three made it through to Friday’s play.

 

17 year old wild card entry Samantha Crawford outlasted Marie-Eve Pelletier (CAN) in three sets to face the #4 seed seasoned veteran Eleni Daniilidou.

 

#31 seed Alexa Glatch won in straight sets for the second time and will face the top seed in her bracket Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain. Arruabarrena-Vecino will looking to defeat her second American in the draw after beating Julia Boserup in the first round.

 

Maria Sanchez outlasted Cristina Mitu of Romania in three sets and will face the 18th seed Krystyna Pliskova with a slot in the main draw on the line.

 

Krystyna’s twin sister Karolina also survived second round action with a victory over Donna Vekic. With a friday win over Edina Gallovits-Hall (ROU) the chance of twins in the draw remain possible.

 

Not to be overlooked is the dominating play of 195 ranked player Shuai Zhang of China who advanced to the third round with an impressive 61 60 romp of the Italian Anna Floris. Zhang has only dropped three games through two matches making a total of 4 unforced errors in four sets.
