While he may miss the upcoming US Open due to his continuing left knee injury, Rafael Nadal’s people are already lining up their man for 2013, with the former No. 1 set to headline a March exhibition at Madison Square Garden.
Also participating in the play-for-pay New York mix will be Serena Williams and WTA No. 1 Victoria Azarenka. The hit-and-giggle has become an unofficial cash-machine stopover for some of the fortunate tennis drawcards in recent years while travelling from February Middle East events to Indian Wells in California for that hardcourt Masters 1000.
Nadal, who has not played for almost two months, has given no indication of when he might return to tennis, saying only that he dreams of playing for Spain in the Davis Cup semi-finals next month at home.
While that wish may or may not come to pass, the 26-year-old is surely expected to have returned to the sport well before his exho date, where is due to face Juan Del Potro. The Argentine is another player who must deal with a delicate problems, with his wrists a constant concern.
Last week’s Cincinnati semi-final victim to Novak Djokovic headed straight to his specialist after the event to have his left wrist checked out after it had been giving him pain. He missed almost a year on the ATP in 2010 due to right wrist surgery.
