US Open Withdrawl List Gets Longer

Rafael Nadal is not the only pullout prospect for the US Open. With the Spaniard pulling the plug on his appearance a week ago due to his continuing left knee problem (Hoffa syndrome, a build-up of fatty tissue behind the patella tendon), other players including another former Grand Slam champion have also made their excuses for the last major of the season which begins on Monday.

Two-time major winner Svetlana Kuznetsova has pulled out due to continuing injury – yet undisclosed. The No. 43 has not played since Wimbledon, where she lost in the first round to Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.

Kuznetsova won the 2004 title at Flushing Meadows, then claimed the French Open five years later. The former No. 2 is joined as an absentee in new York by the top 20 WTA pair of Kaia Kanepi of Estonia and Italy’s Pennetta. Kanepi, the No., 15, did not play Wimbledon due to a heel injury which came after her French Open quarter-final.
