New Haven

Singles – Second Round: (2/WC) Petra Kvitova def. (Q) Nicole Gibbs 6-2 6-4

This looks like good solid U. S. Open preparation for Petra Kvitova, although she doesn’t earn any points yet. It’s amazing to note that seven seeds made it to the quarterfinal here, the only exception being #1 seed Agnieszka Radwanska.

Singles – Second Round: (3) Caroline Wozniacki def. Sofia Arvidsson 7-6(7-4) 6-2

So far, Caroline Wozniacki still seems to own this event — but she still trails Li Na in the contest for #8.

Singles – Second Round: (6) Dominika Cibulkova def. Andrea Petkovic 6-4 6-1

Not much of a match, but merely being able to play is a triumph for Andrea Petkovic. And just winning her opener should put her back in the Top Forty.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Lucie Safarova def. Zheng Jie 6-4 6-0

Winning her opener put Zheng Jie in the Top Thirty, but this means no Top 25 spot for her.

Doubles – Quarterfinals: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Chuang/Peer 7-6(7-5) 6-2

Doubles – Quarterfinals: (2) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Groenefeld/Peschke 6-3 6-3

This has been the year of doubles teams coming out of the woodwork. First it was Errani/Vinci. Now Hlavackova/Hradecka, who won Roland Garros last year but couldn’t back it up — especially on hardcourts. This year, they are proving a true hardcourt threat. It’s going to be an interesting U. S. Open.

Dallas

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) Jelena Jankovic def. (8) Sorana Cirstea 6-2 6-1

We are not, for obvious reasons, going to regard this as evidence that Jelena Jankovic is genuinely out of her funk. But it’s a big boost to her hopes for a return to the Top Thirty. The stunning thing, of course, is that she’s having to worry about a return to the Top Thirty!

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Roberta Vinci def. (7) Chanelle Scheepers 7-6(7-1) 6-2

Roberta Vinci is now one win away from a return to the Top Twenty. Chanelle Scheepers remains just below the Top Forty.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (Q) Casey Dellacqua def. Aleksandra Wozniak 6-4 6-4

After hovering mostly just below the Top Hundred for weeks, suddenly Casey Dellacqua is climbing fast. She should rise above #95.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova def. Dabrowski/Hsieh 6-4 6-3

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Dekmeijere/Falconi def. (2) Begu/Cornet 7-6(7-4) 1-6 10-8 (Match TB)

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
