New Haven

Singles – First Round: (3) Caroline Wozniacki def. Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-3

No matter what happens in the rest of the world, Caroline Wozniacki remains queen here. But she needs a lot more than this to stay #8.

Singles – First Round: (4) Sara Errani def. (WC) Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4 7-5

These two both get a lot of balls back, so no surprise that this took almost two hours. But the final result leaves Bethanie Mattek-Sands still below #200.

Singles – First Round: (6) Dominika Cibulkova def. Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-5 6-3

A fast recovery for Dominika Cibulkova, who retired from her last match at Cincinnati. She knocks Anabel Medina Garrigues below #35. Medina Garrigues managed only one week in the Top Thirty — but she picked just the right week, since it was the week that got her a U. S. Open seed.

Singles – First Round: (7) Maria Kirilenko def. Shahar Peer 6-2 6-2

Shahar Peer was defending 125 points; she will be falling below #60.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Olga Govortsova def. (LL) Vera Dushevina 6-7(5-7) 6-4 6-2

It appears this will leave Vera Dushevina still below #100. And sick of seeing Olga Govortsova, who beat her in qualifying also.

Singles – First Round: Mona Barthel def. Daniela Hantuchova 6-3 7-5

Daniela Hantuchova wasn’t defending anything that mattered, but there is still a significant chance this will drop her below #40.

Singles – First Round: Sofia Arvidsson def. (LL) Melanie Oudin 6-4 6-1

Sofia Arvidsson defends most of her points, but she needs one more win to stay Top Fifty.

Singles – First Round: Andrea Petkovic def. (Q) Timea Babos 6-3 5-7 7-5

A very good win for Andrea Petkovic, considering how long she has been away. And she has plenty of room to add points! This ought to move her back above #40.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Nicole Gibbs def. (Q) Alexa Glatch 6-4 1-6 6-4

The NCAA recently announced changes that will make college tennis even less like the pro game. One wonders if that will influence the plans of Nicole Gibbs….

Doubles – First Round: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Dushevina/Govortsova 6-3 7-5

Just not a good day for Dushevina and Govortsova to be together. They built a big lead in the second set, then blew it completely.

Doubles – First Round: Chuang/Peer def. Grandin/Uhlirova 4-6 6-2 10-8 (Match TB)

A pretty good win for Shahar Peer, considering how bad she looked in singles.

Doubles – First Round: Groenefeld/Peschke def. Amanmuradova/K.Bondarenko 6-4 5-7 10-8 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Lee-Waters/Moulton-Levy def. Date-Krumm/Szavay 6-3 6-2

Dallas

So much for having a Top Ten player in Dallas. Maybe Angelique Kerber looked up the August temperatures or something. She has pulled out, citing a shoulder injury. That leaves a field with no Top Twenty players. It also leaves Emily Webley-Smith, ranked #398, in Kerber’s place as a Lucky Loser. (Which will tell you quite a bit about the qualifying draw….) It won’t make much difference to Kerber; she will stay #6.

Singles – First Round: (3) Roberta Vinci def. Hsieh Su-Wei 6-2 6-2

Hsieh Su-Wei remains below #50. Roberta Vinci needs two more wins before the points start counting.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Pauline Parmentier def. Irina Falconi 6-1 6-4

Irina Falconi stays stuck below #100…

Singles – First Round: (Q) Casey Dellacqua def. Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2 6-2

…but this may put Casey Dellacqua above that mark.

Singles – First Round: Marina Erakovic def. Anne Keothavong 6-1 5-7 7-6(11-9)

This lasted 32 games (and almost two hours and fifty minutes). Marina Erakovic earned 30 points for it. A low payoff rate indeed — particularly since it doesn’t budge her ranking!

Doubles – First Round: (1) Benesova/Zahlavova Strycova def. (WC) Ellison/Ellison 6-2 6-4

Doubles – First Round: (2) Begu/Cornet def. (WC) Harman/Kalhorn 6-1 6-3
