Roger Federer has even not considered the possibility that Rafael Nadal might be finished as a serious rival after the Spaniard confirmed that he is suffering from a chronic knee complaint. For the Swiss world No. 1, it’s just a matter of time before he begins to face Rafa on the courts again in a rivallry which now extends to 29 encounters dating to 2004.
“I haven’t thought about it, that I might play Rafa less, because I am convinced he will come back strong sooner or later,” said Federer, guaranteed to hold the ATP top spot through the US Open. “We have had a great rivalry already, great matches, great fighting spirit, fair play, different type of matchup him being a lefty, me being the righty. The way we play is completely different.
“This is the sort of setup that has it all: me with one-handed backhand him with double, you name it.”
Federer says that injury is all part of the game. Nadal has revealed he’s suffering from a syndrome in which fat builds up behind his left knee patella tendon, making for painful movement.
“I don’t think this is the end just because he’s injured,” said 17-time Grand Slam winner Federer. ” One time one top guy misses a major, I think some make a big deal of it.
“Because it’s true that it’s a big shock, but at the same time, it just does happen from time to time.”
