Next week’s lineup in Winston-Salem is looking particularly shaky after the injury withdrawal of Gael Monfils. And another french headliner, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, is also looking like missing the struggling ATP 250 after doctors ordered him to rest a damaged knee. His presence remains highly unlikely after requiring seven stitches in the knee after running into a fire hydrant last week in Toronto .
Monfils is becoming a chronic absentee from the courts, having last played in Nice the week before Roland Garros.
Like Rafael Nadal, the 25-year-old just cannot seem to shake the effects of a right knee problem. The one-time No. 7 currently ranks 35th and is headed further down if he does not soon manage to make a competitive return. He owns four titles and has been a finalist on 13 occasions.
Local hero John Isner and Andy Roddick are still in the mix, though Roddick has been troubled recently by a back problem which led to his opening loss in Cincinnati this week, while Isner claimed back troubles after losing early in Toronto .
