Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) R Federer def. (10) M Fish 6-3

7-6(7-4)

One more win and Roger Federer clinches the #1 ranking. Even

if, by some wild chance, he loses it, he’ll have a very good

chance to regain it in New York.

Unlike Federer, Mardy Fish keeps sliding — we show him

falling to #24, almost twice the ranking he had two weeks

ago. On the other hand, he managed to defend a lot of

points. It could have been very, very much worse. Despite

the rankings decline, we’d say he’s making a pretty good

comeback.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) N Djokovic def. (12) M Cilic 6-3

6-2

It looks as if Marin Cilic will end up at #13. Not usually a

lucky number, but in this case, it translates into the #12

U. S. Open seed — and that is a fairly nice position to be

in.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (6) J del Potro def. (LL) J Chardy

6-1 6-3

So near and yet so far! Jeremy Chardy we show at #34, one

spot short of a seed. Or, of course, one more withdrawal

short of a seed. Maybe he should try giving someone the evil

eye.

Juan Martin del Potro, meanwhile, is thinking about another

meeting with Novak Djokovic, just two weeks after he cost

Djokovic an Olympic medal….

Singles – Quarterfinal: S Wawrinka def. M Raonic 2-6

7-6(7-5) 6-4

An interesting set of semifinals we’re getting — one

all-Swiss, the other an Olympic reprise. This puts Stanislas

Wawrinka in the Top Twenty (meaning that Andy Roddick won’t

make it after all); he still has a shot at the #16 U. S.

Open seed. Milos Raonic will also have a Top 16 seed, but

this costs him his chance to reach the Top Fifteen.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Bryan/Bryan def. (8)

Qureshi/Rojer 4-6 6-4 10-4 (Match TB)

Another step closer to the #1 ranking for the Bryans.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (6) Bhupathi/Bopanna def. (3)

Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-4 3-6 10-8 (Match TB)

With a combined ranking of #13, Fyrstenberg/Matkowski are

the #3 team in the world in the rankings. But they are only

#6 in the Race — and that’s despite playing together all

the time. They are likely to be in a lot of trouble once the

U. S. Open comes off.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Lindstedt/Tecau def. (7)

Granollers/M Lopez 7-6(7-3) 7-6(7-2)

Lindstedt/Tecau can’t rise above #3 in the Race this week,

but they can get fairly close to #2. Their London spot is

sure.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Dodig/Melo def. Seppi/Troicki 6-0

6-1

It really is amazing how fast Ivan Dodig is improving in

doubles.

No Key Biscayne, No Problem; New Site, Same Great Miami Open Tennis Event

It was the end of an era at Crandon Park for the Miami Open last year. From the Lipton, to the Nasdaq 100, to the Sony Ericsson, to the Sony, to the Miami Open presented by Itau, Key Biscayne saw it all.
