Cincinnati
Singles – Third Round: (1) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (WC) Sloane Stephens 6-1 4-6 6-4
From now on, the points count for Agnieszka Radwanska, but she still needs a title to climb to #1. Sloane Stephens will be around #46.
Singles – Third Round: (2) Serena Williams def. (Q) Urszula Radwanska 6-4 6-3
Urszula Radwanska will probably be #44. Serena will be #4 unless she wins the title.
Singles – Third Round: (3) Samantha Stosur def. Ekaterina Makarova 6-1 6-3
Ekaterina Makarova was the last Top Fifty player who was contending for the last U. S. Open seed. She won’t make it now; this leaves her a little below #40.
Singles – Third Round: (4) Petra Kvitova def. Peng Shuai 6-2 6-2
If Makarova was the last contender for a seed, Peng Shuai was the last serious contender. Had she won this, she would have had a shot. As it is, we show her at #36. There surely won’t be enough withdrawals to let her make it….
Singles – Third Round: (5) Angelique Kerber def. (Q) Andrea Hlavackova 6-4 7-6(7-5)
Angelique Kerber still has a slight chance to reach #6 this week, but she needs about 400 more points. And the player she is chasing, Samantha Stosur, finally played a decent match.
Singles – Third Round: (WC) Venus Williams def. (7) Sara Errani 6-3 6-0
This being hardcourt, we thought all along that Venus was the favorite, but this blowout is pretty shocking. Errani will not rise above her current #10 ranking. Venus of course will rise — we show her up about ten ranking spots. She still has a theoretical spot at a U. S. Open seed (in fact, she is the only player left who could still take the final seed) — but she needs a title.
Doubles – Second Round: (WC) Daniilidou/Peng def. (1) Huber/Raymond 6-4 6-4
This doesn’t bode particularly well for Huber and Raymond’s hopes of staying #1 after the U. S. Open. They weren’t defending anything that matters, but they’re giving Errani/Vinci an opening. Except….
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (5) Hlavackova/Hradeca def. (2) Errani/Vinci 6-3 3-6 10-3 (Match TB)
Doesn’t anyone want to be #1?
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (6) Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez def. Grandin/Uhlirova 6-1 6-2
After a scare in the previous round, it appears Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez have things together.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Jurak/Marosi def. (WC) Lepchenko/Stephens 4-6 7-5 10-8 (Match TB)
Jurak/Marosi got in when Kirilenko/Petrova pulled out of the draw — and they’re obviously taking advantage!
