Novak Djokovic made partial amends for his bust-out at the London Olympics, with the Serb claiming a third Canadian title at the weekend with a straight-set crushing of Richard Gasquet. But the No. 2 has confessed that his failure to win a medal at the Games was a bitter blow.
“The losses at the Olympic Games were more difficult for me emotionally than Wimbledon, but I still played some great matches, played really good tournaments both on grass courts,” said the player who dominated 2011 with a 70-11 record but claimed only his third title of this season with Toronto success in just over an hour.
“If I could have done better? yes, maybe, but that’s sport,” he said of his London heartbreak after failing to win the bronze medal through a loss to Argentine Juan Del Potro. “After the Olympics I sat down with my team trying to figure out what is the best solution and next step – even if I should play the whole hard court season or not.”
The decision came up positive and the weekend results which produce his 31st career trophy and 12th at the Masters 1000 level made the quick switch form Olympic grass to hardcourt more than worthwhile.
“I was never in doubt of coming here, I really wanted to come,” the Serb insisted. “The two losses that I had in three days in Olympic Games gave me even more desire to come here and perform my best and try to win a title.”
